Biohacking your health
Jun 03, 2024I had the pleasure of attending the 10th annual biohacking conference last week in Dallas Texas and WOW was I blown away!
Before I get into the details of this amazing conference, let's chat about what biohacking is.
Biohacking refers to the practice of making deliberate and targeted changes to one's lifestyle, diet, and habits with the goal of improving physical and mental performance, health, and overall well-being. It combines elements of biology, self-experimentation, and technology. Biohackers use various strategies, tools, and techniques to "hack" their bodies and minds, aiming to achieve optimal performance and longevity.
Here are some key aspects of biohacking:
- Diet and Nutrition: Adjusting food intake to optimize health. This can include following specific diets (like ketogenic or paleo), intermittent fasting, and incorporating supplements to improve bodily functions.
- Exercise and Fitness: Tailoring exercise routines to maximize physical performance and recovery. This might involve high-intensity interval training (HIIT), strength training, or specific regimens designed to enhance particular aspects of fitness.
- Sleep Optimization: Implementing strategies to improve sleep quality and duration. This can include adjusting sleep environments, using sleep trackers, and employing relaxation techniques before bedtime.
- Mental Enhancement: Techniques to boost cognitive function and mental clarity. This might include meditation, mindfulness practices, nootropics (cognitive enhancers), and brain-training exercises.
- Wearable Technology: Using gadgets and apps to monitor and analyze various aspects of health, such as heart rate, sleep patterns, and physical activity. These devices provide data that can be used to make informed adjustments to one's lifestyle.
- Environmental Adjustments: Modifying one's environment to reduce stress and enhance well-being. This can involve optimizing lighting, reducing exposure to toxins, and creating a workspace that promotes productivity and comfort.
- Hormonal Balance: Strategies to balance hormones naturally through diet, lifestyle changes, and, in some cases, medical interventions.
- Personal Experimentation: Biohackers often conduct personal experiments to see how different practices affect their bodies. This data-driven approach helps them identify what works best for their unique physiology.
In essence, biohacking is about taking control of one's biology to achieve personal health goals. It involves a proactive approach to health and wellness, often integrating cutting-edge science and technology with traditional practices
The biohacking conference was started by Dave Asprey who is known as the father of biohacking. You may have heard of Bulletproof coffee? That's Dave! He created this popular coffee and continues to use it as a means to improve his health amongst many other tools and strategies.
For this conference, Dave and his team gather experts (ranging from doctors to public figures in the health and wellness space)and the latest biohacking tools to share with attendees.
While there were SO many amazing speakers present, a few of my favorite were,
- Dr. Anna Cebeca (The girlfriend doctor) who spoke about the importance of oxytocin in sexual health, menopausal health and health in general.
- Jill Carnahan who shared her struggles with breast cancer, chrohns disease and mold toxicity and how her experiences have helped her to find her calling in life which is helping others to remove toxins and reduce their risk of disease. She has a documentary that was recently released too!
- Dr. Sara Gottfied who spoke about metabolic dysregulation. I've been a fan of Sara since way back in my Paleo days so it was fun and educational to hear her speak.
- Dr. Daniel Amen who spoke about his mission to end mental illness by creating more healthy brain awareness and teaching the importance of brain scans.
Along with the amazing speakers was the tech hall which housed everything you could think of that could "hack" your health. Sauna's, cold plunges, stem cell products, non-toxic skin care, grass-fed meat, oxygen chambers, and SO much more. I could have spent all day in there just browsing all the cool biohacking tools and chatting with fellow health professionals.
I'll be sharing more about some of the speakers and products over the next few weeks but for now I'll leave you with this quote,
“Your diagnosis is not your destiny” You have a choice everyday you wake up. Will you just accept? Settle?"
I hope you're answer is NO! You are in charge of your life and your body. You can literally change your future by taking better care of yourself and prioritizing your health. Biohacking is one way to do that but first, you must start with the basics. Eat healthy, move your body daily, get 7-8 hours of sleep, practice stress management and make YOU a priority!
